Lee County School Board | 333,169 SF | 2007
In 2004, the Lee County School Board decided that consolidating their administrative offices in one central location would not only save travel time, but would make their school district more efficient. As a result, they purchased an abandoned 320,000 square foot mall to serve as their new office. Harvard Jolly assisted the Lee County School Board with space programming in order to accommodate over 700 personnel in more than 40 different departments.
Consisting of four separate wings, the building's existing skylights serve as organizational nodes. The building's utility rooms, restrooms, copier/workrooms and conference spaces are located around these nodes. A new main entrance was fashioned near the middle of the building to provide a controlled access point for the public. In addition, the existing entries to the mall were diminished in scale and are used mostly by staff.
A 250-seat board room with a state-of-the art broadcasting center was added to the facility. The district's main computer and satellite emergency operations center are located within two structurally-hardened areas that also serve as the superintendent's and school board's meeting room in the event of an emergency. In addition, the Lee County Public Education Center houses a wellness center, daycare center, culinary arts center, classrooms for adult education programs, and space for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
