Tampa, FL

Tampa General Hospital | 53,000 SF | 2011

The Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a state-of-the-art facility that more than doubles the size of Tampa General Hospital's existing unit. A partnership between USF Health and TGH, the NICU is the only academic neonatal center in the region. The facility utilizes private beds and small pods to offer improved caregiving and personal space at the bedside.

The 53,000 square foot unit increases the current NICU from 52 beds, which were grouped in open areas, to 82 private rooms and a 12-bed transitional nursery.

The NICU combines the best and newest technology to care for sick and premature babies within a more soothing and comforting environment for each newborn. Using private rooms allows for parents to stay for extended periods of time with their infant that is receiving care. This emphasis on creating a family centered environment is further exemplified by the inclusion of adjustable lighting, pullout beds, and a family lounge with childrens' areas, washer/dryer, showers and kitchen.

Our team provided room mock-ups to the NICU staff early in the process that allowed nurses to obtain a hands-on understanding of elements such as equipment layouts long before receiving a patient.

The consideration of interior design was essential for the NICU based on factors such as acoustics and the increased presence of patients' families. Calming aquatic patterns and materials transformed each room into a comfortable and tranquil atmosphere with the combination of water hues, earth tones, woods and natural materials. A home-like aesthetic was achieved using durable and low maintenance materials. Rubber floors throughout the unit reduce noise. Custom wayfinding graphics and other details convey a message of security and comfort.

The project was funded in part by Les and Pam Muma with a generous $6 million gift in memory of their daughter.
